FAQ
THE WORLD
The world the roleplay is set in very similar to our own world. There are a few major differences between the two, but for the most part it is the same as our own. This means that technology is ahead of our time, ten years in fact, so everything is either touch sensitive or holographic.
The year is 2024, and when the first in-game day starts it will be December 8th. The prison itself has been open for a while, so you might find some people that have been there for a few years, how lucky! It will not line up with real dates for very long, due to the difference in time passing.
My character can do magic/talk to ghosts/etc!
There is, unfortunately, no real magic in this world. There are no aliens, vampires, or talking animals. This means that if your character is a magician, vampire, alien and so on in their canon, they must be normalized to a regular human being. The same applies to talking animals; they must be turned into a human in order to be applied for in this game.
Characters are only able to do things within the scope of human ability. Physical strength must be reasonable. If your character is canonly able to cut people in half with a karate chop, they will not be able to in-game. However breaking boards and cinder blocks with bare hands is perfectly acceptable (if explained by training), because it is possible in real life.
The matter of ghosts is similar to how it is in reality, relying majorly on belief. Certain unexplainable phenomena can appear, devices can go haywire, etc, but ghosts do not actually exist in the traditional sense. Your character can believe they can communicate with spirits, and others may believe this as well, but they will not really be doing it.
What about the law?
Not every character is able to land themselves in prison via some heinous violent crime, so the world has been changed to allow everyone an ample chance at prison time!
This means the law enforcement is much more strict and punishments more severe. Minors are often tried as adults rather than minors, even if their crime is small and especially if their crime is large. Prisons accept minors as inmates even if their stay is to be only for a few days, which it often is.
International prison transfers are fairly common.
How do historical canons work in this world?
If your character is from a historical-based canon, such as Samurai Warriors which features characters based on real life historical figures, or something like Afterschool Charisma where characters are clones of historical figures, it is up to the individual player whether or not they are recognizable as having the same name as someone in history. Additionally you have the option of merely changing the character's family name.
What about fictional works in this world?
Like any other universe, the world this game is set in has a plethora of books, movies, video games, comic books, etc. for characters to partake of and be familiar with. The major franchises tend to be the same as in the real world; DC Comics publishes Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, while Marvel publishes the X-Men, the Avengers, and so forth; there is a video game/anime/manga franchise called Pokemon; and popular American TV shows include Supernatural and Smallville. However, the names of the characters in the series are not the same as they are in the real world, and for the most part we'd prefer if they could be left ambiguous. (This goes mainly for characters' real names; there might be an X-Man named Cyclops, and characters could refer to him, but they shouldn't bust out the name Scott Summers.)
THE PRISON
How does my character arrive into the game and prison?
Your character has already been tried for a crime and found guilty. They may have been taken to another prison before arriving at Deadman Wonderland; all that matters is now they're here. They arrive in a van. There are no windows, so they do not know where they are headed or even what the facility looks like from the outside. At some point, the truck will stop and your character will fall unconscious.
When they wake they will be inside the prison, laid on their assigned bed. They will be outfitted with a collar and a rulebook will be beside them as well as a single piece of life-saving candy. If your character claims that they're not on death row, well... that's just too bad, isn't it? Life isn't fair, after all.
What are the collar's functions?
The collar functions as a GPS tracking device, a way of administering sedatives and also a way of slowly pumping your bloodstream with a deadly poison that will kill you if you do not eat a candy every three days. Characters will also be administered birth control through their collars and thus will not menstruate or get pregnant.
What is CP?
CP is the prison's own special currency; it is stored on a plastic card in a database, and so it is not physical coins. The real world equivalent of one CP is one Japanese yen. More information can be found here!
How do I keep track of my character's CP and when they need to purchase candy?
One of the moderators will be keeping track of this for everyone. You can check the current amounts/dates that your character needs candy by on this page. It will be updated on Sundays.
What are the events going to be like?
The events are going to be similar to the daily games shown in the canon we are based on. You can see more information on events here.
Are there IC rules? How are they enforced?
Yes! There are a variety of rules that can be read in your character's rulebook or the prison's network.
Punishments vary. The most common form of punishment is a CP fine; second most common is forced labour. If your rule-breaking is severe enough, you may be escorted from place to place and only allowed to spend time in the cafeteria or your cell.
Is sex banned?
Sex is not banned. In fact, it is welcomed! Characters may rent out suites for a night, and those suites are also supplied with all the necessary materials to make sex safe and fun for everyone.
However, this only applies to consensual activity. Attempted rape will result in the rapist being injected with sedatives; the collar will know your intentions and will shut you down before you are able to carry them out. Characters who attempt to rape will be unplayable until the next IC day.
What are the NPCs like?
You can see a basic overview of them here. NPCs besides guards are for the mods to play only; you may use guards as you see fit, however killing of any NPC is not allowed. Generally though, guards are there to break up fights, restrain characters and corral them into the stadium at the time of events. Fighting them does not work no matter how strong or armed you are-- you will be either sedated or overpowered.
They will, however, answer questions if you ask them some. You do not need a mod to play this out, as all the answers to these questions can be made up by the player on the fly or found on our information pages. If you're really uncertain, ask a mod!
Information about the prison and grounds includes things like the warden's name, where you can find items or places inside the prison (the CP card, prescription drugs, candy, etc), the price of any item except for things from home, how much CP you currently have (the exact number), how many prisoners are currently in the prison, the time and day of the next performance, what sort of hours they work, curfew times, job & school wages, and how many more performances you can skip (not including ones that are mandatory for everyone).
They also answer questions about the park outside of the prison! Such as: what kind of rides are in the amusement park, how many people are currently inside the park (an exact number, keep in mind the time of day for this one; the amount nearly doubles on a performance date/time), how many people have pre-bought tickets to the next performance, and the park's closing and opening times (9:30AM & 12:30AM).
They won't answer questions about their personal lives/themselves.
CHARACTERS
Who am I allowed to apply for? Are there any restrictions?
There are almost no restrictions on who you may apply for, so long as they are fictional. This means we accept characters from media such as comic books, animanga, movies, television, webcomics in addition to original characters. When in doubt, ask!
Characters below the age of 7 cannot be applied for. In addition, the Deadman Wonderland characters Rinichirou Hagire, Tsunenaga Tamaki, and Sorae Igarashi may not be applied for.
What is expected of my AU history?
You are allowed to go in any direction you like, so long as it keeps your character as close as possible to their canon self's personality while also maneuvering them into prison. This means the background can be whatever you like! It does not have to be a mirror image of canon. So long as it lands them in prison and keeps in mind the world's limitations, it is highly likely you will be accepted.
In regards to canonmates, please be as vague as possible with them unless you and another mun are apping together; it's okay to name drop someone who is immensely important to your character, but be prepared to retcon if you get that canonmate and they do not want to do what you have outlined.
My character wouldn't commit a crime serious enough to go to jail...
They can still go to jail! Maybe they were framed, or in the wrong place at the wrong time, or maybe they did something that wasn't really that bad, but the prosecution was overzealous in getting a conviction. Also, even if a character is only sentenced to a week or two in jail, they can still be sent to Deadman Wonderland to serve it out, or transferred partway through their sentence. And once they're there, they won't be getting out.
My character has NEON BLUE hair!
That's fine! Unnatural colors in our world are natural in this one.
MECHANICS
How does time pass here?
7:1. Every seven days in real life is a single day in character. It will be announced in the IC communities as new days start.
How do characters interact?
The majority of this game will be in person interaction rather than over a device. Devices are able to be purchased with CP, and function much like a phone in the Deadman Wonderland canon. The video comes up as a hologram, and are rather compact. An alternative to the devices are computers, which are in the computer lab of the library.
What happens when my character dies? What about injuries?
We do not punish for death. Death is encouraged, this is Deadman Wonderland after all.
As for injuries, they will be left untreated. You come back fine after you die, so why waste resources on an infirmary? Medical supplies are available for purchase, but no staff will help dress wounds or splint a broken leg. Maybe if you beg they might assist a little, however.
Is there a language barrier?
Characters will mysteriously find themselves able to understand each other when speaking the language they think in. This is explained ICly by a translator in the character's collars; however, if a character deliberately speaks a different language or switches from one to another (regardless of whether or not it's the language they think in) for whatever reason, it will not be translated.
What happens when I drop?
Your character disappears. No one knows where they go-- but they're gone. Not for good, but until someone else apps them.
Are we allowed to pick up a char someone else dropped?
Yes! Your character will always start off fresh and previous CR will not be remembered by the character newly apped. Previous CR still in the game will remember their stay in the prison, and can comment freely on this.
Can I reset my character? What about canon updates?
This is an AU game, so canon updates are not allowed.
Resetting your character however is perfectly fine! Please contact a mod before doing this; your character will be unplayable for an entire IC day, and they will return to the prison with no memories of their stay.
Are there activity checks? How active do I have to be?
Nope, no AC here at all. If there isn't much of an interest in it then there might be a check in just to see who is still around, but other than that RP however you want.
If you have an additional question or comment, please reply here.

The setting page reads, "[G block] is where the prison keeps their prized inmates, but the deadmen are still free to roam and come back up to where normal prisoners are." However, I've seen statements in chat that G blockers are in fact stuck in G block. Which is correct?

How much of a fine are we talking? The amount of the product plus some other fee, or what?

But is it possible to app a character who's been at DW for a while? I'm only asking because Chaplin immediately after being arrested would be a very different character from Chaplin as shown in canon, and it's the latter I'm interested in playing. I could say that she's been laid up in the infirmary recovering from a penalty game for the past month to explain why she hasn't been around and I can bullshit some reason for her to not have an absurdly inflated amount of CP if that would be a problem.

Since this is ten years later then Chaplin would follow suit. There are regular inmates walking around and other Deadmen that have been hiding out in G block. If Chaplin is apped, then you could say she's been down in G for a while and has been recovering just like you said.
It would give an explanation and could potentially open up ways to bring in the Carnival Corpse as well!

Yes, there are other shops such as ramen stands and such within G-block. Just like the manga, go crazy with that.

I want to app Fetch from the inFAMOUS series. In the series there are some characters called Conduits, who essentially have powers over things like electricity, concrete, smoke, glass, etc. The girl I want to app has control over neon. So basically this will be easy to translate into being a Deadman, bUT here is where the question comes in.
There is an organization in the series meant to track down and contain conduits. The conduits they apprehend are sent to a training facility called Curdun Cay where they're trained to hone their powers and eventually go out and capture more conduits. My question is how much of this would need to change to fit in with Neorn-verse? If necessary I could change Curdun Cay into a mental facility of some type, but I'm just curious if the aforementioned could work in any capacity as it's a very large part of Fetch's backstory.

This character is perfectly fine to app as long as they are an AU version. :)
